St Joseph’s School, Lockhart opened its doors on the 3rd of February in 1908. At the time, there were only sixteen boys and twelve girls enrolled in the school. The church served a dual function of both a school during the week and a church on weekends.
The number of enrolled students increased over time, and a new building was located adjacent to the existing school around 1920.
The Presentation Sisters staffed St Joseph’s up to the 1960s, when the first lay teacher was brought in to teach kindergarten. In 1984 we had our first lay principal.
Throughout the school’s life, many improvements have been made to the school’s facilities, enhancing our student’s educational experiences. These have included shade sails, a new playground, a beautiful COLA and new playground surface and so much more!
In 2008 we celebrated our centenary – 100 years of Catholic education in Lockhart. Four years later, we had to erect a new classroom to accommodate the growing number of students. This new learning space was built on the convent grounds.
In recent years, Catholic Education, Diocese of Wagga Wagga enabled the refurbishment and extension of the administration block.
In 2008, St Joseph’s celebrated 100 years of Catholic education. Our primary school was opened in 1908 by four Presentation Sisters and we are proud to carry on their values and traditions. At St Joseph’s, we strive to inspire and motivate each child towards achieving their full potential through the love of Jesus Christ.
