St Joseph’s School, Lockhart opened its doors on the 3rd of February in 1908. At the time, there were only sixteen boys and twelve girls enrolled in the school. Over the years, the church was eventually moved to a new site in Ferrier Street. It was here that the church was joined to the school building and served a dual function of both school and a church.
The number of enrolled students increased overtime, and new buildings were fabricated adjacent to the existing school around 1918-1920. The Presentation Sisters staffed St Joseph’s up to the 1960s, when the first lay teacher was brought on to teach kindergarten. In 1984 we had our first lay principal, as well as one Sister teaching full time and two lay teachers.
Throughout the school’s lifetime, we’ve successfully applied for a number of grants to improve the school’s facilities, thus enhancing our student’s education experiences. These grants have allowed us to include adequate shade sails, create a modern playground, install synthetic grass to the quadrangle and so much more! In 2008 we were all honoured to celebrate our centenary – 100 years of Catholic education in Lockhart. Four years later, we had to build new classrooms to accommodate the growing number of students we were enrolling. These new learning spaces were built on convent grounds. And in in recent years, the Catholic Schools Office of Wagga Wagga enabled the refurbishment and extension of the administration block.
We also took the opportunity to refurbish the toilet block and painting throughout the school.
In 2008, we celebrated 100 years of Catholic education at our school, which was begun in 1908 by the Presentation Sisters. We are proud to carry on their tradition as we strive to inspire and motivate each child towards achieving their full potential through Jesus Christ’s love.
